How to Get People To Stop Bringing up Past Wounds

The words flew out of my mouth before I could stop them. I knew I had just derailed the happy conversation we were having but I couldn’t resist speaking up.

He had made a comment that touched an old, raw nerve, something that had remained tender and unhealed for the past few years. The kind of thing that never got fully resolved between us, but instead, was fiercely defended, excused, and promptly shoved under the rug anytime it came up.

I was somehow expected to just “let it go” and “get over it”.

But for three years, it remained painfully unresolved.

My hurt feelings flared up, and I expressed how hard it was for me to hear his words so casually.

He cut me off.

“When are you going to stop bringing this up?”

Right. It’s time to spell that out.

How to stop the bleeding

It would be months later before the seemingly impossible happened.

We parted ways after I concluded that my feelings did not matter to him. My pain and hurt…
