In the last decade, Google searches for “ayahuasca” have quadrupled. And it’s no surprise since ancient plant medicine has found its way into modern culture.

Jim Carrey has tried it. So have many other celebrities and creative types. Ayahuasca ceremonies have starred in movies like Wanderlust and While We’re Young.

Chelsea Handler traveled to Peru to sit with the medicine — and film the whole experience for her Netflix show.

At least a dozen people I know personally have done it. I myself have been tempted over the last few years. Traveling through hippie hotspots in South and Central America, you will find that ayahuasca ceremonies have become almost as readily available as yoga classes.

Ayahuasca’s sudden trendiness and ubiquity make it seem like a magical shortcut to inner healing and spiritual awakening.

So what’s the problem?
