The levels of consciousness can be thought of as levels of reality because they determine our experience of the world. They dictate how we see people, things, and situations in our lives.

This idea was explored in depth by the American psychologist and spiritual teacher, Dr. David R. Hawkins. One of his most significant contributions to the world of psychology and spirituality was the map of human consciousness.

This map has been instrumental for my personal growth and spiritual journey.

The Map

Map of Consciousness by Dr. David R. Hawkins

The map details how reality is viewed at different levels of consciousness. It shows how a person thinks and predominantly feels at each level of awareness. Each level determines how we will react to people and events in our lives.

The bottom of the map shows the lowest states of consciousness, dominated by the negative emotions of Shame(20), Guilt(30), Apathy(50), Grief(75), Fear(100), Desire(125), Anger(150), and Pride(175), and the destructive behaviours that accompany these levels.
