Don’t Lose Your Head in Mexico

The cartel is everywhere in Mexico. They are behind your hotel doors, peering into your toilet stalls and even checking on what you are eating while on vacation. All for the intent of capturing you when you least expect it, holding you hostage, and cutting off your head if your family does come up with millions of dollars in ransom money. Quite the terrifying ordeal… or is it?

Now there is some truth to the paragraph above, but it depends on the area you decide to vacation in. Normally people are not looking to vacation in these highly dangerous and out-of-the-way areas. You need to go far outside your comfy hotel to come in contact with any kind of cartel.

Most of the most dangerous activities and areas are on the U.S. border.

Over the past three years, I have traveled back and forth for work from the U.S. to Puerta Vallarta, Guadalajara, Jalisco region. I have also traveled into the Cancun area. If you go online and read about these areas, you will find a lot of scary stories, warnings, and things that you want to avoid.

Yet that is not the case. For instance, in Puerta Vallarta, most of the police on the streets are women and they are very polite and kind to the tourists. They are not the hardened police or federal agents you find in Tijuana or other border regions. Why? because there is not much in the way of violence happening there.

What you find are families with kids walking the seaside boardwalk, couples holding hands, and retirees enjoying a sunset stroll. There are no fights, cartels, or things that have ever made me feel unsafe while I was there.

No matter how late I am out, the place feels safe to walk or to hang out in a club. Eating at the many beautiful seaside restaurants is stress-free and enjoyable. A lot of Westerners live in Puerta Vallarta without any complaints.

Cancun is a little noisier but with the same feeling of safety. That also goes for Playas de Carmen and Tulum. I rented a car and drove up and down the coast from Cancun to Tulum back and forth without any issues. The roads are nice, well-kept, safe, and plenty of nice places to stop, sightsee, and eat.

Now it goes to say that no matter how safe the place is, there is crime. These places are still considered to be cities and all cities have their problems. As long as you know where you are going and stick to the tourist parts of the county, there is little to worry about. Enjoy travel and live…
