Mythereum — Card Evaluations, Part 1 — Patches versus Bones
Welcome to the first of many card reviews for the Mythereum TCG! When reviewing cards, it is important to cover all aspects of a card or card(s) impact on how the game is played and how your experience as a Warlord works. Key areas include comparison of health and attack, special abilities, class and magick generation versus health generation.
Today we will be reviewing two of the top cards in Mythereum, from the founder GENESIS edition! The cards are:
As we can see, they already do not like each other! This is for obvious reasons, they are direct competition for (opinion!) best card in THE GAME. Unlike most other Mythereum cards, you may also notice that they have UNLIMITED defense, making them a prime card to own, especially with only 4 Magick as the trigger. Let’s go ahead and do an individual review of each card first.
Patches is the usual go to for top Hide Ability in Mythereum. That is also because she is more common, with 44 instances of the card in existence.
She has very low defense, which should not be much of an issue, since she can defend instantly.
Her attack is much higher, which is the stat that we want to focus on here. With a maximum of 67 (+30 upgrades) she is quite the viable defender for your armies.
The grey is a bit heavy, and using black means you will want to ideally pair her up with a white magick user.
Overall, Patches gets the call for best card, because her low health is of no true significance due to having trigger-able infinite defense, and being so low gives any genesis heavy deck extra health to the Warlord (You)!
Bones is a highly undervalued, underused, and underestimated card. This of course can be good for the owner/operator — where in comparison, Patches already has a reputation so people immediately shift their strategy in her presence. They are only slightly different.
Bones starts with 6 more health and only 1 less attack. 27 defense will not make a difference in Genesis matches, so using Patches has a slight advantage in the health boost from being lower.
Bones can be boosted to 37 (or higher) attack, just like Patches, so not much difference here. Additionally, Bones only has 36 instances ever produced, so will be a bit rarer.
As you can see these two cards are extremely similar in almost all fashions. Their two dividing points are:
- Health Boost. Patches provides the player with a higher health boost, whereas Bones provides just a bit less. For survivor, awakening or MythiCat decks, this will not have much impact, but in any pure Genesis deck, every point of health can mean the difference between a win or loss.
- Gender. So both cards are classified as “Creature”, but they are different in one way; gender. Patches is female and Bones is male. This makes a difference in gender-ized battle situations. So ultimately, you will actually want to have one of each of these, or focus on the gender matching whichever one you own.
With that being said, these cards are staples in any deck(s) that can allot them into the battle selection (at least 1 Genesis card). Almost all Genesis deck strategies are built around the methods to emphasize and exploit their infinite defensive ability. This is due to Mythereum Classic Battle Mode revolving around card advantage — if you can defend one round without consequence and attack back, you may have likely gained the higher ground by removing one of theirs without losing one of your own.
Each of these cards has two inherent weaknesses:
- Very low Magick generation rate. Each card reduces the deck Magick production by what appears to be a guaranteed 1, and given the digits associated with infinite defense, the high value reduces the overall value. In most common pure Genesis decks, this will result in a 2 or a 1 overall generation rate. This means they operate best in high generation hybrid decks with either awakening, or ideally survivor.
- They are weak against, and only against, cards with “annihilate” special ability. Annihilate (which we will cover in a future article) will instantly kill any other card it faces, or if there is no leader present, instantly kill the opposing player for that round (reduce health to zero). here are the cards that you must watch out for if using a HIDE card:
As you can see, all but the very bottom three (Commander, Mercenary and Nyx) have natural defenses high enough to withstand an attack from an un-enhanced Patches or Bones. This is of course no coincidence, as you can see, their natural attack (above) increases as their defenses decrease. This was and is part of the balancing features.
With all that being said, remember — Genesis was the founder set for Mythereum. There were only 5000 cards generated in total, making any of the cards mentioned in this article very difficult to acquire. Patches is especially valued and sought after, so it may be tough to find one, but once you do, it will change your entire battle experience.
