The Dissolution of Parliament Becomes Permanent

CBC News: Canada headed for a federal election on Sept. 20

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of the Dominion of Canada, calls an election on Sunday, August 15, 2021. What happens next is not exactly what he is expecting.

The day before, Stephen wakes up to smoke in the air and ashes sprinkled over everything on the back deck of his house. He and his wife would soon be financially independent. The date for the closing of the real estate transaction that would signal the beginning of his retirement is Thursday, August 19, 2021. He and his wife have been preparing for this moment since his father-in-law died of COVID-19 on February 26 of that year. On that day, his career as a designer had ended.

Today, Saturday, August 14, 2021, he sits in bed and types on his Apple iPad Pro. Most days, he opens up iA Writer and types the title of his daily log. It is already evening before he thinks to start writing.

The Revolt of the Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium by Martin Gurri

As he is reading the Kindle version of The Revolt of the Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium by Martin Gurri, he comes across these words.

The problem was inertia. Political change seemed impossible, because it had never happened: and with such a dearth of hope, fear easily won the day.

An idea flashes across his mind, inspired by a section title in the book.

An insignificant man threatens the sanctities of a very large nation

Change Agents

The previous day, he has been in a couple Zoom meetings. One meeting is with Gien. He is collaborating on an idea Gien has for a bottom-up systems change movement: Stop Reset Go. (Stephen had responded to an invitation by Ruta in the Sunday Telegram meeting for the Infinity Project to attend the Stop Reset Go meeting on Monday.) Gien says that Derick is depressed that his city in Ghana is sinking into the ocean because of climate change and sea-level rise.

Stephen invites his friend Gien, who lives in a tiny house in Capetown, South Africa, to another Zoom meeting that starts at noon Pacific Time.

During the meeting, he is asked to join a breakout room to collaborate on defining the persona for our participatory design project. Stephen pitches the idea that we should question the idea of a persona, as the concept is derived from a public relations and marketing approach that tends to dehumanize people as “audiences” and “target markets”. He types his ideas into the chat. Then he summarizes them in his daily log.

I was talking with Jurgis and Tara in Re&Co on Clubhouse on Tuesday.

I brought up the idea that we often design for the majority, the people who are in the middle of the Bell curve. Then, we try to think about the edge cases when we have more time and resources. More often than not, the edge cases are never served, because there tends not be more time or resources.

There is an interesting correlation between the 3.5% who are least served by the existing systems, who are immigrants being displaced by violence, economic collapse, and climate crises.

According to the 3.5% rule, ‘Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts — and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change.’

If the goal is to serve a young girl in Ghana whose village is sinking into the ocean because of the rise in sea level, how might we serve her by empowering her to realize how she is valuable in the process of learning how we cooperate and collaborate together?

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

Earlier in the week, Stephen had participated in another Zoom meeting hosted by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at the University of Manitoba.

The event was being co-hosted by the Centre for Human Rights Research at the University of Manitoba.

We are looking forward to answering your questions TOMORROW! Join us, @NCTR_UM and a panel of non-Indigenous researchers to address what settlers need to know residential schools and colonization. Remember to register and submit your question(s) today. #TruthBeforeReconciliation

Stephen had posted his question as a series of replies to the Twitter post.

I am a settler living in Sumas First Nations territory.

The truth is this land is not our land. Settler Canadians in so-called “British Columbia” have invaded the unceded territories of the First Nations and have assumed ownership of the land. Crown land is stolen land.

The Province of British Columbia represents the thieves and criminals who stole the land to kill and assimilate the original inhabitants and exploit their resources. We cannot depend on corporations and governments to do the right thing. They were designed to enact a genocide.

And according to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), they are killing all of us. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/aug/09/ipcc-reports-verdict-on-climate-crimes-of-humanity-guilty-as-hell

Should we not then agree the Dominion of Canada, founded upon the Doctrine of Discovery, is a crime scene, implicating the Provinces and Territories, the Dominion of Canada, the British Crown and its corporations in crimes against humanity and ecological devastation for profit?

Canadian settlers are complicit in the ongoing crimes against humanity. We must surrender to the governing authorities, the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, and submit to their ways and laws to live in reciprocity with Mother Earth and all living beings.

As Canadian Settlers for Indigenous Sovereignty (CSIS), representatives of The Corporation for Apartheid Nationalism and Aboriginal Dispossession and Assimilation (CANADA), we admit to our crimes, surrender, and give the land back.

Stephen thinks to himself, “What if Parliament is dissolved and CANADA falls apart when love overcomes the fear that is driving the political inertia?”

That is how the (r)evolution begins.

You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.
