Submission Guidelines: What We’re Looking for & Best Practices
Welcome to ROADFOLK. We are here to encourage others to lead better lives, regardless of their individual goals. We believe in authentic and deeply engaging storytelling. What we’re looking for are stories that are rooted in personal experience and are rife with ponderous takeaways for the reader. All we ask is that your piece is, on some, level, about mindful living. Better relationships, immersive travel, improved daily life, conscious eating, responsible consumption — the intention of better living as the common thread that ties everything together.
By virtue of being fairly new to the landscape of Medium, we’re constantly looking for contributions and submissions to serve you better and to make the magazine a more holistic read. We want to make sure that what we deliver to our readers is the best it can be be.
Below, you will find everything you need to know in order to get your written work featured in ROADFOLK, as well as general best practices on how to succeed here on Medium. This quick resource guide is meant to make that as easy as possible for you.
Let’s begin, shall we?
Things to Keep in Mind
ROADFOLK only accepts drafts. We do not accept any work that has been previously published elsewhere. Please note that if you submit an already published work (not in draft form), it will appear in the order it was originally published and therefore may not appear at the front of the homepage as new drafts do.
We don’t always publish immediately. There are only a couple of us back here doing the work. Please feel free to contact us using the contact information at the bottom of this article if you haven’t seen your story published in a few days.
Please be on the lookout for any correspondence from our editors. This is how we alert you of potential changes you may want to make, suggestions, and advice. If we do not hear back from you on our notes within 72 hours, we will send the story back and wait for you to resubmit it.
Best Practices
Absolutely, under no circumstances, will we publish an article that is gratuitously offensive. We have zero intentions of curbing anyone’s beliefs but we draw the line at anything that is racist, sexist, overtly politicised or hateful in any manner.
The first tag of your story must correspond with the navigation tab you feel your piece fits best within (Boutique Hotels, Perspective, Deep Dives, Culinary Tourism, Travel Journal). This is for our benefit, as well as yours, lest your story lands in Medium limbo.
Each post must have an image to follow the layout on the main pages. These should be credited to the photographer or open domain. If it is your own image, please make note of that.
How to Submit Your Story for Consideration
Reach out to us via email with a link to your Medium page and username, with a few articles already published. Once approved, we’ll add you as a contributing writer. Now that you’re a writer with us, it’s time to send us some stories. The next time you finish a draft, just do the following to submit it to us:
- Click the “…” button at the top right corner of the page.
- Select “Add to publication”
- Choose “ROADFOLK” from the list of publications.
- Click “Add draft” to submit your story for review.
- Wait patiently for 48–72 hours for your draft to be reviewed
Alternatively, if you don’t have a Medium account and would still like to be published, send us your story via email and one of our editors will publish it and provide a by-line and any other social media platform you’d like to provide along with your story.
If you focus on the written guidelines above (especially Medium’s), you’ll have a good shot at getting your story published, curated, and noticed.
