Review of Poppy Xing’s “The 5 Most Disappointed Films in 2015”

Thoroughness and comprehension: ✔️

Stretching of creative muscles: ➕

Using the right tools for the job: ✔️

Poppy Xing, the opening this piece set me up lower than what this deserves.

“Just clarify that the films I mentioned in this are not the “worst” films of the year. It just means that I have high expectations on these, and I truly believe that these five movies should be much better.”

What this sounds like is not standing on an opinion and almost excusing what is about to be written below this paragraph. I’d recommend playing around with different titles to better convey what this piece will be about, that way you can jump right into the countdown. Such as:

“5 Films that Disappointed Me in 2015”

I have a couple formal things to suggest. Every time you have one of the movies as a title of your countdown, it would be helpful to have that linked to the movie site/Wikipedia page/review, with a video trailer underneath. This will make following along much easier for the reader. Check out the following example:

  1. Monk Comes Down The Mountain
Official trailer via Youtube.

It’s not the first time that the director Chen Kaige turns a great topic into a piece of crap. The experienced director must be a control freak: he must want to control how the audience understand his film, or he wouldn’t use tons of words to explain the behaviors of main characters…

Also, make sure to mention where your quotes are coming from, such as the Micheal Nordine mention.

Other than that, I really enjoyed reading your take on movies that disappointed you! While the idea and focus is good, I would tighten up the insertion of additional media and the form your words take.
