THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS
Anurag Kashyap does it again, tells mystery with a knack.

Shoes are the best indicator of a girl’s personality, they say. That Girl in Yellow Boots, then, is an apt name. A thin, red-haired British girl always in her standard footwear (yellow boots, obvioiusly) illegally works in a dingy massage parlor in Mumbai; not to make some money, but to find her long lost dad of whom she doesn’t even have a single photo. Running from pillar to post, at the receiving end of snide remarks from officers and shelling out wads of cash in bribe, Ruth (Kalki) is sure to find her way.
Apart from the repurcussions of the corrupt system, her always-high-on-cocaine, seedy boyfriend and his messed up business make it all the more difficult for this foreigner. But difficulty does not enfeeble her.
Close to flawless screenplay and cinematography, the movie captures visuals of a typical daily-life in Bombay: taxis, stray dogs, and baraats. Casting becomes the strength of the movie with Naseeruddin Shah, Prashant Prakash and Gulshan Deviah who marks a commendable debut.
The movie is devoid of clutter including the numerous songs Bollywood movies generally come with. It has a sole track, very well placed, worded and themed.

Kalki is a star in this one. Her killer looks make her look like a mystery herself. And Anurag Kashyap sprinkles hints like surprising fragrances in a house, that are so obvious that you can’t ignore them and they make you want to know where they emanate from. And when you figure it out, you are shell-shocked. Like “how the hell did this get into my apartment?”
Watch it to know why she takes her boots off in the end.
