10 amazing facts to celebrate 10 incredible years.
Exactly 10 years ago today on the 31st of October, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto posted a paper titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System to a cryptography mailing list.
Bitcoin remained under the radar for the first few years, gradually attracting more and more attention up until 2017 where it hit its tipping point. Today Bitcoin and its underlying blockchain technology are known about globally.
Yet, even though it’s already been around for a decade, we’re only just starting to understand what it could change, mould and how it could impact our world. We’re still tweaking and optimising the tech, understanding its potential effects across industries.
One thing’s for sure though, Bitcoin’s underlying technology will come of age, and Satoshi Nakamoto’s legacy will live on through all the good it brings to our world.
To honour the occasion we’ve put together ten facts about Bitcoin.

- The first block of the first blockchain was mined on January 3rd 2009 and the first Bitcoin transaction took place on the 12th of January 2009 between Satoshi Nakamoto and Hal Finney.
- The first real-world transaction was made by Laszlo Hanyecz for a couple of pizzas from Papa John’s. Laszlo paid 10,000 Bitcoin for his dinner.
- The ‘Bitcoin pizza’, as it’s come to be known, would have been worth $197,830,600 in December 2017, its highest ever value.
- Satoshi Nakamoto’s last know public correspondence was in April 2011.
- Up until April 2013 Bitcoin was still valued at under $100.
- Bitcoin lost 83% of its value in three days in April 2013.
- Bitcoin’s highest price so far was $19,783.21.
- Despite the price dip, Bitcoin’s hash rate is holding steady at 55,000 TH/S with the network growing 550% over the past year.
- As long as there are at least 2 people running the protocol, Bitcoin can never be stopped.
- The last bitcoin will be mined in 2140 and it will be Bitcoin number 21,000,000.
