As cheesy as it sounds, the best things in life are free, especially when it comes to reducing stress in daily life. I’m talking about things like exercise, sleep, and breathing.

Here are three more of my favourites that I practice on a daily basis.

Humming

One of my favourite things to do is chant but that’s not always appropriate in public spaces. I can’t suddenly take a deep breath and chant Om for 30 seconds while standing in a supermarket queue. People will think I’m weird.

Humming is a good middle ground because it’s so innocent and inconspicuous. On top of that, it also has some incredible benefits. It:

  • Reduces Stress — Humming stimulates the vagus nerve, which controls the body’s “rest and digest” state. This helps to lower my anxiety and create a sense of calm.
  • Improves heart rate variability (HRV) — Humming can enhance our ability to cope with and recover from stress as it slows down the heart and lowers blood pressure.
