Five years ago, I was volunteering at a Vipassana meditation centre. I picked up an intriguingly-titled book that would end up changing my life: the ‘Manual of the Requisites of Enlightenment.’
It was a list of 37 qualities to build, at different stages of the path, to practically ensure spiritual success.
It wasn’t dry book knowledge: it just happened to be written by an enlightened person, the great grand-Guru of the Vipassana movement, who was the most famous Burmese monk in world history.
Here was a commentary on the Buddha’s words that were not only alive, but made me come alive by practicing them.
And my appreciation for the text was so much deeper than the average reader, because I’d studied Sanskrit etymology for years…
