When your past experiences are traumatic, or even mildly unhappy or unfulfilling, it’s easy to get bogged down with visualizing everything that didn’t go your way. It’s also easy to cling to our pain and wear it like a jacket in the winter. And sometimes, our trauma becomes our identity.

I have wasted what feels like an excessive amount of time ruminating on my past. At one point, I felt like I was trying to sort through it all, hoping to somehow create a better past than I had. I looked for a hidden emotional key to unlock a happier version of my life story.

Like a movie with an alternate ending, I kept waiting and wishing to find the ending that suited me.

I am not a fan of dredging up the past. That said, I believe our past history informs our present reality and often impacts our future. So, it benefits me to reconcile and come to peace with my past in whatever way that makes sense to me.

Knowing that my choices are influenced by the lens I see through, it only makes sense to get to know my filters and how my experiences have colored those filters. When I do that successfully, I set myself up for success in the…
