‘You Can’t Live on Scenery’ She Said Before We Emigrated
Read between the lines when loved ones give you unwanted advice — their words may come from concern and love
On July 1, 1996, my husband, Warren, and I, filled with anticipation and hope, landed in Canada as new immigrants from England. Stepping off the plane at YVR Vancouver, we carried a few bags of belongings and the dream of a better life.
We were surprised and flattered by the enthusiastic efforts people appeared to be making to celebrate our arrival. Everywhere we went, smiling people waved Canadian flags and danced in the streets. We saw mouthwatering displays of maple leaf-shaped cookies and cakes in coffee shops. There was music and fireworks — it was wonderful.
And then we discovered we’d arrived on Canada Day. What a fantastic coincidence to start our new life on a national day of celebration!
