Oops, I Need God Again!

Have you ever noticed how many of us instinctively turn to God when life takes a tough turn?

When things go wrong, I have seen many of us, including myself, pouring out prayers to God, clinging to the belief that He will fix everything for us now, asking for solutions or to ease the pain.

But I have also observed that when life is happy and we are content, we don’t often pause to thank God for the blessings we have.

This is something I have observed a lot in India, in particular and I am not sure how it is in other parts of the world.

What is the Tradition of Mannats in My Family?

Growing up in India, the concept of Mannat — a vow or promise made to God — was deeply embedded in my family’s traditions. Whenever life presented challenges, my mother, my aunt, and my grandmother would turn to God, making promises like, “If You grant me this wish, I will do something for You in return.”

There were these bargains with God, such as:

  • “If You grant me this wish, I will come to ‘this’
