Welcome to NewAtlantis!

We are a group of researchers, scientists, developers, and entrepreneurs united in our impatience for scaled and near-term solutions for two of the greatest threats we face — the twin challenges of a warming planet and biodiversity loss.

We seek to address these issues by aligning government, industry, and individual benefit with the improving ecological health of our ocean.

In this newsletter, we’ll keep you up to date on what’s going on at NewAtlantis, post opportunities to contribute, and share news from the worlds of ocean conservation, decentralized science, and regenerative finance. You can also keep in touch with us every day by joining our conversation on Discord.

What’s going on at NewAtlantis

  • The NewAtlantis bioinformatics team has onboarded our first metagenome protocol to our open platform. This is the first step towards processing external data sources to quantify biodiversity. Go check it out on our GitHub.
  • We’re so honored that NewAtlantis has been recognized for the work we are doing. We received a grant from Protocol Labs to develop decentralized data science tools for cloud-based genomics, we were the number one funded DeSci project in the Gitcoin Grant Round 15, and we were just selected to receive Future Quest DAO’s Innovative Climate Projects grant.
  • Our team just booked tickets to the International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) to talk to the leading experts in ocean conservation. Let us know if you’re going to be there!

Positive news around the globe

After remote coral reefs near the Southern Line Islands experienced mass coral die-offs due to record warming in 2015, scientists were shocked by what they saw recently: a vibrant scene that proved the coral’s resiliency and adaptability to warming climates. Read more about it here.

NewAtlantis Advisor Cristina Mittermeier

Our advisor Cristina Mittermeier has been an incredible inspiration to the team here at NewAtlantis. She’s had the kind of career that most people dream of — world-renowned National Geographic photographer with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences, co-founder of SeaLegacy, UN SDG14 Ambassador, and now, NewAtlantis Founding Advisor. Read our conversation with Cristina here.

How to get involved:

Please join us on Discord and jump into a conversation relevant to your interest and/or expertise (ocean science, tokenomics, technology, art). All are welcome! If we are going to solve these issues, it’s going to take all of us!

Each Weds at 9:30 am PT, we host an open chat for anyone in the community wanting to learn more. Check out our Events channel in Discord for more information. (If you are new to Discord, and would like a quick tutorial, just email jj@newatlantis.io)

Finally, please follow us on Twitter and share our posts. We are on a mission and the more we can share information on how we can combat biodiversity loss and climate change, the faster it will happen.
