Day 05 — NaNoWriMo 2016
When I look at the words written on the pages for the first five days of NaNoWriMo, I think to myself, “Wow! Have I already managed to get this far while writing with a pen and paper?” The second thought I have to myself is thus: “I hope I can read my handwriting well enough when it comes time to type it all up!”
Somehow I’ve turned into an early afternoon writer these last few days, as that is when I have had sufficient free time to write. The hardest thing for me to do during NaNoWriMo is to NOT stress out about getting my writing in at a certain time of the day. My wife let me know last year that was one of her biggest complaints about my participating as well, so I’ve been trying to enjoy the process more, and stress over it less. So far I think I’m doing okay at that.
The other thing I’m trying to do is not get so caught up on word count. I feel like my pace is pretty good, so I’m not writing too little. It helps that I can’t look at the bottom of a screen to see how many words I’ve written or how many I have left. I know based on my handwriting that I will need a little over six pages in my notebook for about 1,600 words, so as long as I get somewhere in that range each day, I’ll meet my goal.
I just want to keep the story moving along, and not get bogged down in meeting some mystical word count for each scene or the whole thing. I know it’ll take a lot of words to tell the story, but I don’t have to write them all in one moment and at the same time. The best thing about writing is that I can take it one word at a time.
Words written today: 1,631
