National Novel Writing Month 2016

Well, there it is. I’m officially participating in National Novel Writing Month (aka — NaNoWriMo) for 2016. I was on the fence about it at first, probably because there’s been so many different opinions on it.

Some people say it’s not worth it.

I’ve heard some people say that publishers tend to shy away from anything that was written during NaNoWriMo. In all honesty, I can see that. I’m sure agents have their mail boxes flooded with submissions starting in December from people who have taken on the challenge.

I’ve hear self-publishing authors use it to hash out a first draft they can work on.

Quite a few people do it for fun.

The opinions on NaNoWriMo go from one end of the spectrum to another.

I was having a hard time deciding what would be the best for me. Ultimately, I decided I would take part in it, but without the pressure of “winning”. Of course, I’m going to try to get to 50,000 words by the end of November, but, I’m not going to beat myself up about it if I don’t write a full 1,667 words a day. I mean, lets get real here. I’m a mom, have a full time job, and some photography stuff coming up. I need to allow myself some leeway. I’m taking the “Rebel” route on this one.

The kick off for NaNoWriMo was yesterday, so I sat down and decided to give it a try. I planned on working on The Damned, but, my brain had other ideas, and nothing was coming to me. I even tried hand writing. It just wasn’t working.

So, I just said screw it and started typing. I figured if I gave my brain control, something would eventually come out that was worth building on…and I wasn’t wrong. The funny thing is, it had absolutely NOTHING to do with The Damned.

By the time I was done, I wrote 786 words for a brand new story titled The Un-named Adventures of Elizabeth Rose. (I even surprised myself coming up with the title. It just feels right, and I don’t think it will be changed. Surely, it means it was just meant to be, right?)

So, now I have two stories in progress.

I have to admit, I’m really excited about The Un-Named Adventures, and I’m hoping this will turn into something spectacular. I posted an update in the Ninja Writers Facebook group, and the feed back I received was pretty good. (Which, if you are interested in writing, and want to learn more, I highly recommend this group lead by our fearless leader, Shaunta Grimes. She is such an amazingly kind lady and in my opinion, she’s put together one of the best writing groups on Facebook.)

Once I polish up the synopsis and put together a few more details, I will post more about it. I want to get a few of the characters hashed out and lay down a better foundation for the story.

For anyone participating in NaNoWriMo, my user name is HeavenlyAirhead. Add me if you like. I like having new friends.

For now, I’m going on “Mom Duty” and taking off to cook dinner for the Boogers. I will be writing tonight, so hopefully, I can add another post in the next few days with some more information on The Un-Named Adventures of Elizabeth Rose.

Thanks for reading.
