Winning NaNoWriMo 1: Plotting and Scheming

National Novel Writing Month challenges you to write 50,000 words in 30 days. That might or might not sound like a lot to you, but writing a novel is a lot more than just words on the page. Adequate preparation can shave a lot of time off of the writing process, and best of all you can start the prep work before November 1st.

These tips, while written for NaNoWriMo, are of course of general use for anyone with aspirations towards becoming a novelist.
