For my feature research and writing project I am choosing to write about LGBTQIA+ rights. I will write about the current rights that are in place for the LGBTQIA+ community because it is important to recognize that monumental strides have taken place for the community such as the Defense for Marriage Act bill, which legalized same-sex marriage. In addition to legalization, the LGBTQ community has greater representation in mainstream media. However, as many strides have been taken forward, there have been countless strides taken back for the LGBTQIA+ community. Rights have been under fire which will be the main discussion of my feature research. Some of those rights include anti-transgender bills, school policy bills, youth healthcare bans, sports bans, and other legislation. Since 2018, there have been nearly 670 anti-LGBTQ bills filed, which is an appalling number and indicates that discrimination towards the community is a serious ongoing issue. I would also like to highlight violence and crimes committed towards the LGTBQIA+ community. Lastly, I am planning on discussing the psychological effects that all the bans and discrimination have had on the LGBTQIA+ community.

The rainbow flag is also known as the gay pride flag.

I believe it is important for the public to be aware of what the dangers that the LGTBQIA+ community is facing right now because even if it doesn’t affect someone directly, it will still affect another human being with feelings and emotions. We need to advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community to help fight against discrimination and inequality. Supporters of the community must unite to help create a safer world where all individuals are treated equally and with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
