9 rural workers had been killed in Colniza, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The slaughter happened in the week in which the Eldorado dos Carajás massacre happened 21 years ago.

Colniza is considered one of the most violent cities in Brazil. The majority of conflicts are related to agrarian issues. In the state of Mato Grosso alone, 40.028 families were involved in rural conflicts in 2016.

The highest rate of murders in recent years was recorded in 2016. 61 murders. An average of 5 deaths per month. The Colniza massacre shows that these rural conflicts are worsening. In the first 4 months of 2017 alone 19 more murders were reported in the countryside. Which equals 32% of total deaths recorded in 2016.

The Colniza massacre is not an isolated incident in Brazil and has direct link with agribusiness and land concentration. 57% of these rural conflicts occur in the Amazon region.

These murders can not go unpunished
