It’s no longer Storytelling it’s Story “living”

Birmingham hosted the first ever Hello Culture: “Remix” event today for media professionals to learn and explore ideas around the ever-evolving digital world. Panellists included Alex Ruhl, VR Director and Producer and Alison Norrington, Creative Director and Founder of Story Central. Both speakers discussed audience experiences and immersive storytelling through different platforms and the shift from storytelling to actually “story-living”.

We as audiences have a desire to be “involved” in the content that we consume, whether that be through contributing ideas, identifying with characters or feeling emotions there is a sense of intimacy which comes with this and allows us to feel connected. However, with new technologies allowing “virtually” anything to be possible rather just contributing, watching or listening to content we can now live and experience that content.

Speaking at the event today, Alison Norrington said “invite people in, let them step in but always let the story be at the centre of everything as technology can sometimes take-over” which is something that VR Director, Alex, has put at the forefront of her work. She spoke about the new age of story living through VR “people get different experiences from it as everyone thinks differently and we are the director, everything we look at dictates the story” her work includes love-story drama Keyed Alike and a tour of the famous Chatsworth House both which we as the audience are able to experience, in virtual form. The pieces are made as realistic as possible and carefully put together, Alex said “we can be a certain character in the story and experience day to day life of that character like being a CEO of a company and going to a meeting” she showed us an image of a boardroom meeting and the view of being sat down at a table “you are that person and living that story”.
