Narrative Analysis: Nine in 10 African countries set to miss urgent COVID-19 vaccination goal

The World Health Organization, WHO did carry out a study on the extent of readiness of African countries’ readiness to meat Covid-19 vaccination goal set for September 2021. The study was necessary as the vaccines were getting scarcer thereby putting 47 out of 54 countries at risk of not meeting up the September target.

The main setting for the report is the continent of Africa. Africa had recorded about 5 million Covid-19 cases with 10 countries recording a spike in new cases of more than 30% in the past week. The choice of this setting is not unusual as that is where the cases are happening.

There are two major characters in the news: Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa and the United States President Joe Biden. Dr Moeti sees taking Covid-19 vaccines as a do or die case for African continent. Millions of Africans are vulnerable and exposed to the virus and it is glooming for the continent as third wave is almost unavoidable. As one of the pragmatic steps to curtail this looming disaster, President Joe Biden plans to donate half a billion vaccines to almost 100 low-and lower-middle-income countries and Africa stands to benefit from this.

The wealthy nations have begun to turn their promises into actions by delivering Covid-19 vaccines to Africa however, majority of the countries are not well equipped to discharge the vaccines and put in place working strategies. This is definitely creating some level of conflicts actualizing Covid-19 vaccination goals in Africa by September 2021. These conflicts will build up some inconsistencies which will create movements where some African leaders would need to be assertive to actualize the set goals.
