Defending His Life:
Albert Brooks and Rob Reiner Star in the Best Buddy Movie Ever
The new Max TV documentary: Albert Brooks and Rob Reiner, both stars and sons of stars, stayed best friends since childhood
Albert Brooks: Defending My Life is a brilliant Rob Reiner film where two lifelong buddies (stars and sons of legends) boggle our minds.
Imagine the moment they met as teenage boys (they’re now 76) in the Beverly Hills High School Drama Club: A young Brooks had to introduce himself. So he told the class his name: Al Einstein.
Everyone laughed, but the line was true (like all great stories).
If you’re anything like me, you’ve known and loved their work for decades but had no idea they’ve been friends since high school (the high school club also included a young Richard Dreyfuss), marveling over the crazy ways so many wonderful stories intersect and align.
Like the crazy big break for Albert Brooks?
Carl Reiner (comedy legend, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show and Rob’s dad) told Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show (live) that Albert Brooks (then a teenager) was the funniest guy he’d ever heard.
