Joining Nascent
Building the Venture Firm Latin American Founders deserve.
I am excited to share that I am teaming up with Victor and Bernardo to build the next iteration of Nascent, a grass roots early stage venture firm focused on opportunities in Latin America.
After their stellar distributed returns from investing in businesses such as Klar and Belvo from their first ‘proof of concept’ fund, we want to take the firm to the next level and support the next generation of founders in the sectors that we live and breathe.
We believe that investor-market-fit is as important as founder-market-fit.
That’s why we are staying laser focused on the three areas that we deeply understand. Let me expand:
- Bernardo is one of the OG’s of Latam e-commerce, as co-founder of one of the first high growth startups in the region with Linio.com, which was sold to Falabella in 2018. He knows what it takes to build world class teams, scale a product, and raise capital in this sector. We believe Latam has serious potential to become a global commerce powerhouse over the coming decades and we intend to fund tomorrows industry leaders.
- Victor has been active within the Latam technology ecosystem for years, firstly at BCG and latterly through his investing activities at Quona Capital and his founding of Flat.mx, a leading Real Estate Super-App focussed on the Mexican market, which he co-founded with Bernardo. Real Estate is one of the biggest industries in every country in Latin America. The digitalisation of this sector is only just getting going, so we will be spending a ton of time looking for founders innovating in this space.
- On my side, I spent the first three years of my career in Bogota and have spent the last 10 years operating and investing in fintech businesses globally. Starting with my years at Latin American payments business PayU, latterly with Naspers post acquisition where we scaled the business across fourteen emerging markets, and ending with the last 5 years at Anthemis, a Global Fintech VC, where I led our investments in Latin America. Financial technology has largely led the charge in bringing Latam into the global tech community’s collective consciousness over the past 5 years or so, but as we continue to rewire how money flows around the globe there is still a lot to be done. We will be sharing more about particular themes and areas we are excited about in future posts.
I couldn’t ask for two better Partners to turn our vision for Nascent into a reality and I am excited to get started!
We will be operating at the earliest stages of company formation and will run a high conviction strategy, leading rounds and supporting our founders journeys every step of the way.
Venture investing is a team sport now more than ever, and we will be looking to collaborate with our friends within the ecosystem.
As active members of the Latam tech community we want to bring all stakeholders (Angels, Operators, Founders, LPs and Incumbents) together to drive successful outcomes for all and take Latin America to the next level on the global stage.
Impact — We truly believe that the economic growth of Latin America over the coming decades will be unlocked through market-creating innovation and entrepreneurship, and we intend to be there to drive the capital required towards the entrepreneurs brave enough to will their ideas into existence.
Timing — The next 10 years will be transformational for the region as software continues to eat Latin America. The pandemic and the red hot venture market of the last 3 years has finally shone a light on the sheer size of the market opportunities that still need to be addressed. The quality of the founding teams now being produced in Latam is of a global calibre.
As we know from past market slowdowns, the next three years is the ideal time to be deploying capital into early stage businesses, built by tenacious founders, serving massive TAMs and solving real problems.
