The annual JHM awards, nicknamed “the Johnnies,” bring together the top students journalists in Canada for a fierce competition that celebrates excellence in the country’s student press. The JHM gala + awards ceremony takes place on the last night, preceded by a keynote and dinner, and serves as the perfect opportunity to address all attendees. It’s a fancy, highly-attended and fun culmination of a great conference.

We’ve extended the JHM submissions until Oct. 31! SUBMIT YOUR ENTRIES NOW.

If you’ve never heard of the JHMs before:

The JHMs are the awards that student publications in Canada compete for — the JHM coordinator sends hundreds of submissions to professionals in the Canadian media, who read through them and announce the 3 finalists a month before the conference. Winners will be announced and awarded on Jan. 6, 2018.

It’s really easy to submit your work for these national awards — just go to nash80.com/jhm, read the guidelines, select the category you’re interested in and fill out the form. Categories include news writing, layout of the year, photojournalist of the year and much more.

Winning a JHM looks great for you, for your masthead and on your resumé. Plus, if you win in the labour or diversity writing categories, your prize will come with some $$$ (thanks to the CMG).

Questions? This year, the JHM coordinator is Sean Wetselaar — now at theScore esports, previously at the Toronto Star and The Eyeopener. If you have any questions, email him at jhm@cup.ca.

We’ve got a lot of exciting things to announce soon — including some great events. Whatever you do, don’t email farnia@cup.ca or sierra@cup.ca or sidney@cup.ca with your questions.
