You’ve got your NASH80 ticket in hand and you’re on your way to downtown Toronto. You’re aboutto experience the most dope student journalism conference in your life. Finally. You’ve been waiting since 2017! But you’re so excited that you almost forgot that you’ll also want to find snazzy places to eat (other than when we give you dinner on Jan. 4 and Jan. 6).

We understand your excitement. And since we still want you to eat well, we’ve made a list of close by places we recommend for whatever your situation.

Salad King

Perfect for the situation: Someone challenges your love of spicy food and you need to prove yourself.

Aside from simply serving great food, Salad King is famed for their 20-chili heat chart. Don’t actually go with 20 chilis, unless you are physically prepared. Get the Golden Curry or ask for the Islamic Noodles from their secret menu. Despite the suggestive name, this place doesn’t actually serve salads.

Pho Pasteur

Perfect for the situation: It’s 4 a.m. and you still need a damn good meal.

Pasteur Pho’s humble appearance may be unfamiliar to some locals, but the 24/7 vietnamese noodle joint is pretty rad. Somehow, their food tastes even better knowing that you can go anytime of the day and any day of the week. Cash only though! ATM is just on the corner.

Lou Dawg’s

Perfect for the situation: You realize that you haven’t tried Ryerson’s official drink! It’s called a billy — go get one.

In the city, Law Dawg’s is known for their bomb barbeque. At Ryerson, they’re known for their bomb staff. This isn’t the place you’d want to come on a diet, but it’s the perfect place to come and whisper ‘fuck my diet I’m at NASH80.’ Don’t forget to grab at least one Billy before you leave — orange juice, beer, amaretto and whiskey. It’s good, I swear.

Patties Express

Perfect for the situation: You don’t need a reason to eat a good patty.

Either as a quick snack or your entire lunch meal, Patties Express is where the Jamaican Patty comes to life. They’re cheap and fresh AF. Try a patty inside coco bread, then get your butt back to the conference!

Kinka Izakaya

Perfect for the situation: Got a small group and trying to find a place to eagerly discuss all the things you’ve learned at NASH80. Just SO MANY THINGS.

Come to Kinka Izakaya to experience their bustling atmosphere and to drink sake out of their bamboo shoots. Between their daily drink specials and their stacked menu, you’ll have your fill of awesome Japanese dining. Try what your waiter recommends that day.

Hair of the Dog

Perfect for the situation: You met a cute hunny at the conference and want to go somewhere more quiet for a drink.

The first reason you should consider this bar is because there are cute pictures of dogs everywhere. The second reason is because of their nice beer selection and more-than-good bar food. Go for their Thai Salad or Butter Chicken Grilled Cheese paired with a German beer you just discovered.

Fit for Life

Perfect for the situation: Trying to find a quick, cheap hangover breakfast (No, we won’t be serving breakfast).

Since we are not serving breakfast and don’t want to hear any complaints about it, Fit for Life is definitely a great option. Get out of bed, go for a little walk, and get some air after your late night on the town. The breakfast sandwich and coffee option is a life saver. It’s made in front of you and much better than McDonalds, although you may be tempted.
