Values are the Energetic Drivers of Our Aspirations and Intentions and the Key to Individual Performance and Flourishing

According to the Barrett Values Centre, our individual values reflect what is important to us. Values are the energetic drivers of our aspirations and intentions and a shorthand way of describing our individual and collective motivations. Together with our beliefs, they are the causal factors that drive our decision-making. Who you are, what you hold dear, what upsets you and what underlies your decisions are all connected to values.
And as Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi puts it, it is how we choose what we do, and how we approach it, that will determine whether the sum of our days adds up to a formless blur, or to something resembling a work of art.

Achieving Personal Mastery

In order to grow and develop, we need to be aware of our own values, as well as of how these values influence our decisions and actions. The values that are important to us at any moment are a reflection of our current needs and our unmet needs from the past. Some values change priority as we move through the different stages of psychological development; other values stay the same.

According to the research done by Richard Barrett of the Barrett Values Centre, values could be positive and potentially limiting.

Positive Values, often referred to as virtues, enable us to live authentically, foster connectivity, and contribute to the common good. When we let our positive values drive our decision-making, we build connection, enable bonding and create loyalty and trust. We feel at ease with ourselves and others, and we feel comfortable in our physical and social environment. Positive values promote personal growth and create internal cohesion.

Potentially Limiting Values arise from the fears and anxieties we have about not being able to meet our needs. When we let our potentially limiting values drive our decision-making, we create separation, doubt and mistrust. We feel uneasy and quickly become stressed. Potentially limiting values prevent personal growth and promote isolation.

Personal mastery involves letting go of your limiting values and beliefs, and replacing them with positive values and beliefs. To do that, you must learn how to manage, master or eliminate your fear-based beliefs. When the beliefs of your ego are out of alignment with the values of the soul, you lack authenticity. When the beliefs of your ego are in alignment with the values of your soul, you’ll experience internal harmony and a deep sense of joy and contentment.

As Robin Sharma puts it, you can recall your personal greatness by starting the process of chipping away everything that is not truly you. The fears you have picked up. The limiting beliefs you have accumulated. The false assumptions that divorce you from your most authentic — and staggeringly brilliant — self.
According to Tony Schwartz, all of us as people have a finite reservoir of energy in any given day. Whatever amount of energy we spend obsessing about missteps we have made, decisions that do not go our way or the belief we have been treated unfairly is energy no longer available to add value in the world.
