Survival and Thriving of the Fittest

As far as organisations, survival and thriving of the fittest means being: Risk-Fit, Strategy-Fit, Scale-Up Fit and Future-Fit.

“Survival of the fittest” is a phrase that originated from Darwinian evolutionary theory but is popularly used to describe the idea that, in nature, there is competition to survive and reproduce.” It is a metaphor that I find useful to describe what makes an organisation not just survive but thrive.

Risk-Fit — Strategy-Fit — Scale-Up Fit — Future-Fit

Each of these aspects comes with certain individual values, competences, mindsets, awareness and collective practices that are reflected in the organisational culture. They define if an organisation is merely surviving and satisfying regulatory risk requirements or is ready to scale-up and transform the challenges of our times into opportunities.

Often our focus is on some of these areas and we neglect others. Following is a brief description of each of them:

RISK-FIT means people have the necessary individual competences, beliefs, values, mindsets and awareness that are needed to execute the Risk Strategy of the organisation, as well as the collective ability to identify, discuss and reflect on current and future risks of the organisation.

STRATEGY-FIT means people have the necessary competences but also the energy to reach optimum levels of performance and engagement in execution of the current business strategy. This stage is about competences, systems, processes and culture in place but also focus on employee wellbeing to maintain highest level of performance.

SCALE-UP-FIT means people in the organisation have what it takes to scale-up the business successfully while retaining what it made it successful in the first place. Some of the worst mistakes in this moment are done because of following what is perceived to be “best practices” without carefully considering the uniqueness of the organisation and not taking care of the challenges between “old” and “new” people and cultures. FUTURE-FIT means people in the organisation understand how the world is changing on an individual, organisational and societal level, they pro-actively work to acquire new competences and transform obsolete mindsets and maintain an “above-the-line” approach of seeing opportunities where others see challenges.
