Proud to be recognised as a global leader on climate change

National Grid included in CDP’s Climate ‘A List’ for disclosure and action

We’re trialling a lower carbon alternative to the insulating gas SF6

Each year thousands of companies submit their climate disclosures to CDP for independent assessment. The disclosure system is used by investors to highlight the companies that are taking a proactive approach to climate change management.

Last week CDP published its annual report, which tracks progress on corporate climate action. It identifies companies that are making significant progress contributing to global emission reduction efforts.

National Grid scored within the top nine per cent of more than 1000 companies worldwide that participated. This means we’ve achieved a place on the prestigious climate ‘A List’.

It’s also recognition of the actions we’ve been taking to reduce our emissions and mitigate climate change in 2015/16.

Our submission focused on our global approach to climate change. It included our performance data, management of climate related risks, and innovation. It showed how our global business is playing a part in the decarbonisation of our communities and society.

We’ve set ambitious targets to reduce our greenhouse emissions by 80% by 2050. And we’re working hard across the entire business to reduce emissions and find new and innovative low-carbon solutions.

All this is helping us find a better way to do business; building environmental benefits that go hand-in-hand with profitability, resilient business operations and delivery of efficient and high-quality services to our customers.

We’re making great progress towards our target to reduce our greenhouse emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

We have currently made a 63 per cent reduction against our 1990 baseline.

Meeting the target will require new ways of working and innovation across the business. We’re working across the business and with our suppliers to reduce emissions and manage our environmental impact.

The Climate A List is released in CDP’s Out of the starting blocks: Tracking progress on corporate climate action report. This sets the baseline for corporate climate action. It reveals that global corporations have started the transition to a low-carbon economy and some are already capitalizing on the opportunities this presents.
