McDonald’s UK was one of the 44 inaugural signatories of the Vision for Literacy Business Pledge in 2016. Leading businesses have committed to helping raise literacy levels in the UK by taking clear action in three areas: within their workforce, in their local communities and at a national level.

Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to encouraging children’s reading, McDonald’s launched the Happy Readers campaign in 2013, offering free books with children’s Happy Meals. Through the campaign McDonald’s has given away millions of books from some of the UK’s best-loved family authors, from Roald Dahl to Enid Blyton, and non-fiction books from award-winning publisher DK’s ‘Amazing World’ series.

In September 2016, McDonald’s launched the latest Happy Readers campaign, which brought the total number of books it has given away to families to 55 million. In partnership with the National Literacy Trust and Penguin Books, McDonald’s UK is currently handing out extracts of Jeff Kinney’s much-loved Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the fifth Happy Readers promotion and McDonald’s hope to distribute 11 million books with Happy Meals before 1 November 2016. The titles offer a window into the mischievous world of schoolboy Greg Heffley and his wimpy kid escapades, making the hugely successful series accessible to millions of children.
