General Overview

A community for a Local Theatre is focused on promoting the performing arts. Activities that could be organized through a theatre community include dance, music, opera, musicals, and other performances. This community type is uniquely suited for local theatres who wish to fund the core elements required to put on successful shows.

Local theatres face the challenge of not receiving sustainable funding for their space and events, and not always knowing what the people want to see. The ability to fund an theatre’s expenses directly through community interest opens the possibility for unique performances and creates a more meaningful connection between the audience, performers, and organizers.

Examples

  • Students at a college who want to fund a play for their school
  • Community Theatre that funds the production of locally sourced plays
  • An organization that works to commission world-renown artists to perform musicals

Token Use

The token in a Local Theatre Community can serve as admission to performances, as well as the power to vote on what plays turn into future shows.

Once enough members join the Community, they can vote on different plays for the theatre to produce. If a show gets the majority vote, then funds from membership fees are allocated to fund the project.

Projects

What are some examples of projects that could be proposed within the Community to enhance the value of the community?

  • New wardrobes for the performers
  • The acquisition of new musical instruments
  • Renovations to the venue
  • Bringing in a play from another group of performers

Votes

What can the community decide on together to ensure the best possible experience for everyone involved?

  • What topic or theme a new play should be about
  • How large a marketing campaign should be to attract a wider audience
  • Choose the schedule and timing of performances

Tasks

What are the things that need to be accomplished for the community to thrive that can be taken on by members?

  • Create photo and video content to promote the awareness of upcoming shows
  • Run a social media channel that communicates with other theatres
  • Quality control of shows submitted to the Community before a general vote

Conclusions

Theatres are about entertainment. Community formed around a theatre allow for members to participate more meaningfully in the creation process of the events produced by that group. Additionally, the theatres themselves can find financial freedom more efficiently through the direct support of their local community.

We would like to acknowledge that any examples you read in this series are simply a small subset of possibilities for communities to be built on Native. We are excited to see what communities ultimately do with our platform, and want to get different groups thinking in the right direction.
