This is not financial advice; you are responsible for your own money.

All my resources are to be seen as research and conjecture. I do not claim having done any of it with my personal assets in the past or present.

Understand what an ICO Is

Filter based on Common Scam Red flags

As this brilliant techCrunch article says,

  • If the use case that the company is pitching has no blockchain use,
  • If there is no open source repository of their work (I.e., a github)
  • If tokens in the ICO are primarily intended for the developers of the project to receive the token
  • If the founders are a weak team, or an anonymous team
  • If there’s vague information/whitepaper
  • If there’s no clear roadmap

Gauge opinions from affluent people who participate in ICO’s via their ICO spreadsheets.

The red flags and rating of an ICO is more of an art than a science. The purpose is to essentially rank and assess each ICO so they can be derisked. Calculated risks can then be taken.

Getting into an ICO

It all depends but typically early on there’s a stage for only registered investors. After this stage, they usually open to the public and allow for whitelisting a select group. After this point, many allow individuals to invest by sending an amount from an Etherium wallet. This is because many new coins piggyback of Etherium by utilizing something called the “ERC-20” standard, (read on that here).
