Being a Canadian I’ve always been a fan of WestJet. Now, this year has been a doozy for several companies. Take Pepsi, Uber and United as examples. Kevin below says it well:

Shares in United Continental Holdings Inc. on Tuesday came off their worst levels, but ended 1.1% lower than expected just as the airline continued to draw flak for having a passenger forcibly dragged off a plane Sunday. Clearly they will recover, but the negative PR is burning in the minds of millions — it can be damaging in other ways.

Take a look at some of the funniest United Airline Jokes I could find.

And to top it off:

Why is it harmful?

Both current users and non-users are being repelled by bad PR. This infographic shows how especially tampering with loyal users can damage PR.

Taking this all into account, bad PR if you don’t already have a monopoly on the market (unlike Pepsi, United, and Uber) can kill startups. Perhaps this is why we see large companies get away with it.
