I Foro Latinoamericano de YESS: compartiendo desafíos y oportunidades
Para nadie es un secreto la baja participación que tenemos los investigadores Latinoamericanos en eventos mundiales de circulación del conocimiento especializado; y fácilmente podemos encontrar el porqué en la escasez de fondos para nuestras investigaciones. Sin embargo, esa respuesta tiene un trasfondo mucho más complejo, no es más que la consecuencia del contexto social y económico de los países del centro y sur del continente Americano.
Pertenecer a una red como YESS, nos impulsa, no solo a crear lazos de amistad y cooperación con jóvenes investigadores de Servicios Ecosistémicos de otros países; también nos abre los ojos ante las situaciones de desventaja e inequidad que representa hacer ciencia en donde la ciencia no interesa. Esta y otras reflexiones son las que Giovanni y Albaluz han obtenido después de participar por más de 5 años en espacios como las Conferencias de ESP, las delegaciones IPBES y otras actividades de la comunidad.
“He sido muy afortunada por poder autofinanciar mi asistencia a las conferencias, siempre es muy triste ver menos de 10 Latinos en ellas, y peor aún, no nos conocíamos a pesar de trabajar en lo mismo, ¿qué es lo que pasa?” dice Albaluz, esbozando lo que serían algunos de los temas a discutir en el 1° Foro Latinoamericano de la Comunidad YESS. Para noviembre de 2020, algunos días después de la 3ra Conferencia Latinoamericana del ESP, (realizada de manera virtual gracias al apoyo del Colegio de México) Gio y Alba coincidieron en la necesidad urgente de hacer un llamado a quienes se veían identificados con los retos y oportunidades expuestos en el Taller “Young Ecosystem Services Specialists Network (YESS-ESP): Experiencias desde Latinoamérica y el Caribe”, al cual asistieron 34 jóvenes de la red. La idea se materializó cuando el Equipo Ejecutivo definió un Foro Global para acercar a los miembros de la comunidad.
La agenda desarrollada
El viernes 7 de mayo, a las 2 pm hora colombiana, se desarrolló el Foro Latinoamericano, que a pesar de la rigidez de su nombre, fue un diálogo muy ameno en Portuñol, centrado en preguntas sobre la necesidad de migración para estudiar SE, la existencia de fuentes de financiación para investigar SE, la disponibilidad de entrenamiento o perfeccionamiento en SE en nuestras lenguas y en las Instituciones cercanas, entre otras.
Algunos de los participantes del evento, nos cuentan sobre su experiencia. Les preguntamos ¿Qué esperaba encontrar / ganar al participar en este primer Foro Latinoamericano de YESS?¿Por qué cree que es relevante discutir los desafíos de los ECA en América Latina? y ¿Cuál es la principal conclusión que tiene sobre lo que se discutió en el Foro?
Francisco Helio Coelho (Brasil):
Esperaba saber lo que pasó, escuchar y hablar sobre las dificultades y las características de mi Universidad, esperaba conocer personas que investigan temas que impregnan los servicios ecosistémicos, mi opinión se han logrado mis metas, pero si fue el comienzo de algo más grande y constante, entonces superaría mis expectativas, veamos, tengo muchas ganas de cumplirlas y conocer más gente de los servicios ecosistémicos en los próximos eventos, aprender de la gente
Primero, es una forma de crear una red de investigadores más cercanos y quizás con los mismos desafíos, conociendo las realidades, diferencias y similitudes e intercambiando experiencias, fortalecemos, en el sentido de saber que no estamos solos, para que funcionó. Así, no resolvió mis problemas más me sentí más empoderado para enfrentar las dificultades de la investigación en servicios ecosistémicos en un laboratorio, curso y departamento que no investiga en esta área.
Que los desafíos son severos y en muchos lugares son iguales, la investigación en servicios ecosistémicos porque muchas veces son interdisciplinarios, es difícil crecer porque aquí en Brasil las áreas de investigación están muy compartimentadas, la agronomía tiene su departamento, la geografía la suya, etc. son todas las áreas. Otro punto es que es necesario avanzar en esta iniciativa para reunir con más frecuencia a jóvenes investigadores de América Latina, creo que puede dar buenos resultados.
Eliseo Hernández (México)
Esperaba una nutrida discusión sobre la situación actual que representa ser joven investigador en servicios ecosistémicos en América Latina y las perspectivas que se tienen a futuro sobre YESS en la región. Esperaba encontrarme con jóvenes de diversas áreas de estudio relacionadas a los servicios ecosistémicos, con los cuales compartiríamos nuestra experiencia en el estudio de los SE desde las condiciones que imperan en nuestros países, comparar y analizar los retos que existen al estudiar SE en nuestras áreas de trabajo, en conjunto crear estrategias que pudieran solucionar algunas de las problemáticas que se encontraran y la generación de redes sólidas que nos permitieran a los jóvenes que empezamos nuestras carreras estar en contacto con otros investigadores de carrera temprana y con investigadores de mayor experiencia, con la finalidad de hacer más sólida la colaboración entre investigadores del grupo de YESS en LA.
La investigación que se genera en ciencia en un país está relacionada con el desarrollo que este pueda tener, en muchos de los países de la región es muy difícil acceder a educación de nivel superior o la investigación no tiene el financiamiento congruente conforme a los objetivos de los proyectos de investigación, ser joven y de carrera temprana en la investigación agrava el problema, y eso es algo grave, ya que en muchas ocasiones no contamos con las oportunidades y espacios para desarrollar nuestras ideas respecto a la investigación, y eso es grave, ya que los jóvenes formamos parte del futuro de las naciones, y sin jóvenes bien formados, el futuro de las naciones queda en incertidumbre. Se necesitan abrir más espacios en los que los jóvenes con talento y con iniciativa de la región puedan tener acceso a oportunidades de mejorar su formación, de interactuar con investigadores con experiencia y expertos en diferentes áreas, de otra forma, manteniendo las condiciones que imperan actualmente, el desarrollo de jóvenes y naciones será de una forma raquítica.
En toda la región tenemos diferentes situaciones que acompañan nuestra labor de investigadores de carrera temprana, algunas positivas y muchas otras que representan un reto que es necesario volver a ver. Hace falta darle más solidez al estudio de los servicios ecosistémicos en América Latina, en muchas instituciones de investigación se hace el estudio de servicios ecosistémicos pero de forma aislada y sin reconocerlos como lo que son, no hay academias o departamentos especializados en servicios ecosistémicos, lo que dificulta también encontrar asesores o expertos en el área que guíen los pasos de los investigadores de carrera temprana.

Esperaba encontrar un grupo con espíritu de colaboración y fortalecimiento de nuestra región en el escenario de servicios ecosistémicos. Todos saldremos beneficiados de esta interacción.
Cada región tiene sus particularidades. En el caso de los servicios ecosistémicos, América Latina se encuentra en una posición con un altísimo potencial para la prestación de servicios al mismo tiempo que tenemos muchos desafíos para su mantenimiento sustentable. Uno de los desafíos está incluso en relación con la formación de recursos humanos especializados en la materia. Al discutir estos puntos, reconocemos dónde y cómo debemos actuar para avanzar.
Que somos más cercanos y más parecidos de lo que nos imaginamos y, precisamente por eso, tenemos más posibilidades de superar obstáculos trabajando juntos, de forma colaborativa.

Invitación al 2° Foro
El equipo organizador de esta edición ya se encuentra planeando la segunda versión. Será un espacio informal para compartir avances de investigación, pero no con el mismo formato de una conferencia. Se usará una metodología llamada POM10 que consiste en explicar durante 10 minutos, la pregunta de investigación, los objetivos y la metodología que cada participante tiene definida para el desarrollo de sus investigaciones. Posteriormente, una mesa redonda para concretar cuales son las tendencias en la temática, y por supuesto, generar redes de colaboración en el área específica.

First YESS Latin American Forum: sharing challenges and opportunities
It is not a secret that Latin American early-career-researchers typically have low participation rates in world events where specialized knowledge circulates. Although we could easily blame the shortage of funds for our research, the explanation has a much more complex background: the socio-economic context of Central and South American countries.
Belonging to a network like YESS, encourages us, early-career researchers, not only to create ties of friendship and cooperation with other young Ecosystem Services researchers from other countries but also to raise awareness of how disadvantageous and inequitable it is to do science in places where science does not matter. This and other reflections are those that Giovanni and Albaluz have obtained after participating for more than 5 years in spaces such as the ESP conferences, IPBES chapters, and other community activities.
“I feel very fortunate to have been able to self-finance my conference attendances. However, it is always very sad to frequently see less than 10 Latinos participating in them, and even worse, that we did not know each other before, even though we are working on the same topics. What is happening? “ Albaluz says, outlining some of the concerns to be discussed in the 1st Latin American Forum of the YESS Community. In November 2020, a few days after the 3rd ESP Latin American Conference, (carried out virtually thanks to the support of the Colegio de México) Gio and Alba agreed that a call to those who identified with the challenges and opportunities exposed in the Workshop “Young Ecosystem Services Specialists Network (YESS-ESP): Experiences from Latin America and the Caribbean ”, which was attended by 34 young members of the network, was urgently needed. The idea materialized when the Executive Team defined a Global Forum to bring members of the community together.
The developed agenda
On Friday, May 7, at 2 pm Colombian time, the Latin American Forum was held. It was a very entertaining dialogue in Portuñol ghat focused on discussing the need for migration to study ES, the funding sources to research ES, and the availability of ES trainings in our own languages and in nearby Institutions, among others.
Some of the participants shared with us their experiences in the Forum. In particular, we asked them what were their expectations about the forum? why do they think it is relevant to discuss the challenges of ECRs in Latin America? and what is their main conclusion/outcome from the forum?
Francisco Helio Coelho (Brazil)
I expected to know what happened, listen and talk about the difficulties and characteristics of my University. I was hoping to meet people who research topics that permeate the ecosystem services. In my opinion, my goals were achieved, but if it was the beginning of something bigger and more constant, then it would exceed my expectations, let’s see. I have I deep desire to exceed my expectations and get to meet more people from ecosystem services in the next events, to learn from them.
First, it is a way of creating a closer network of researchers, perhaps sharing the same challenges. We strengthen by knowing each other’s realities, differences, and similarities and by exchanging experiences, in the sense of knowing that we are not alone. And that worked. Thus, it did not solve my problems but I felt more empowered to face the difficulties of doing research in ecosystem services in a laboratory, course, and department that does not investigate in this area.
The challenges are severe and in many places they are the same because the research in ecosystem services is often interdisciplinary, but it is difficult to grow because here in Brazil research areas are very compartmentalized. Agronomy has its department, geography as well, etc. the same for all areas. Another point is that it is necessary to move forward this initiative to more frequently bring together young researchers from Latin America. I think it can give good results.
Eliseo Hernández (Mexico)
I was expecting a rich discussion about is the current situation of young researchers in ecosystem services in Latin America and what are the perspectives towards the future about YESS in the region. I was hoping to meet young people from various areas of study related to ecosystem services, with whom to share our experiences about the study of ES from the conditions that prevail in our countries, to compare and analyze the challenges that exist when studying ES in our work areas, and to jointly create strategies that could solve some of the identified problems. Likewise, to generate a solid network that allows young people starting their careers to stay in touch with other early career researchers and with more experienced researchers, in order to strengthen the collaboration between researchers from the YESS group in LA.
A country’s science research depends on the level of development of the country. In many countries of the region it is very difficult to access higher education or funding is scarse and inconsistent with the research projects objectives. Being young and having an early research career only aggravates the problem, since we often do not have the opportunities and proper spaces to develop our own research ideas, and this is a serious problem, because young people are the future of nations, and without well-trained young people, the future of nations remains uncertain. More open spaces where talented and proactive young people from the region have access to opportunities to improve their training are needed, to interact with experienced researchers and experts in different areas. Otherwise, if we maintain the conditions that prevail at the moment, the development of youth and nations will be in a rickety way.
Throughout the region, we have different situations that accompany our work of early career researchers, some of them are positive but many others represent a challenge that is necessary to review. It is necessary to give more solidity to the study of ecosystem services in Latin America, in many research institutions the study of ecosystem services is done in isolation, without recognizing them as what are. There are no academies or specialized departments in ecosystem services, which makes it difficult to find advisers or experts in the area to guide the steps of early career researchers.

I was hoping to find a group with a spirit of collaboration and strengthening of the ecosystem services scenario in our region. We will all benefit from this interaction.
Each region has its own peculiarities. In the case of ecosystem services, America Latina has a very high potential to provide services but at the same time has many challenges for its sustainable maintenance. One of the challenges relates to the formation of researchers specialized in the matter. By discussing these points, we recognize where and how we must act to move forward.
We are closer and more alike than we imagined and, precisely because of that, by working together in a collaborative way we have better chances of overcoming these obstacles.

Invitation to the 2nd Forum
The organizing team for this edition is already planning the second version. It will be an informal space to share research progress, but not in the same conference format. A methodology called POM10 will be used which consists of explaining in 10 minutes, the research question, the objectives, and the methodology that each participant has defined for the development of their research. Subsequently, a round table to specify which are the trends in the subject, and of course, generate collaboration networks in the specific area.
