Healing Order of Operations

Functional medicine is on the rise. Naturopathy is en vogue. Much of it is poorly understood and not administered correctly. There are many aspects of it and there is a proper order of operations. Here are a few things you need to know before embarking on this journey:

  1. Start with health psychology. Functional medicine addresses causes, not symptoms. Most likely, your entire life will have to be overhauled. Your subconscious childhood traumas create thoughts, these thoughts create emotions, and the emotions create chemicals that rush down your bloodstream affecting anything and everything related to your health.
  2. A huge emphasis is placed on Lifestyle Medicine — nutrition, exercise, meditative practices, and mindset. You will have to play your part diligently and for a long time.
  3. Every affliction comes with a number of deficiencies. Neutralizing the true causes of the affliction is as important as addressing these deficiencies or they may come back.
  4. Every affliction is accompanied by hormonal imbalances. (This includes neurotransmitters.) Stress is a common trigger.
  5. Find out what your nutritional and environmental sensitivities are. You can use tests or elimination techniques.
  6. Be mindful of the toxins around and on you — the average American comes in contact with a large number of toxins each day. Their harmful effects are cumulative.
  7. Be mindful of the radiation around you. Your body is an electromagnetic marvel of biochemistry. Voltage-gated ion channels, that are all over your body, regulate your entire well-being. They are sensitive to radiation, which includes Wi-Fi radiation.
  8. Don’t neglect the power of good sleep and all parasympathetic system enhancing activities. They are key to your body’s regenerative abilities. Restful wakefulness works too.
  9. Don’t take supplements without proper direction. Vitamins and minerals compete for receptor space (entrance ports into the cell). Plugging them with the wrong nutrients can keep the ones you need out. Micro-nutrient interactions are also severely under researched.
  10. Use a professional. You may also choose to work with an app that includes a calendar but even then, your wellness plan will have to shift and adapt — that requires direction.

These points provide a streamlined summary but each of these topics is vast in depth and scope. They require patience and reinforcement.

Most importantly, remember that healing is a process. It takes 18 months on average and it requires a life-long commitment after that. If you don’t resolve to pursue an entire course diligently, there is no need to start at all.

To your health!
