A post-divorce vacation leads to a new opportunity.
“You have such lovely feet, Kimi,” said Samantha Cobalt.
“Ah, thank you,” I said.
“Relax!” Samantha said. “Really, I don’t bite, unless you want me to.” She chuckled. “May I?” She motioned to massage my shoulders.
“Ah, sure.” I turned slightly on the couch to give Samantha Cobalt — the Samantha Cobalt, heiress to the Cobalt Fortune — better access to my back. She began kneading her fingers into my shoulders. I allowed myself to relax a little as I stared at the kitchen table. To my left was the bay window with a gorgeous view of the beach and ocean beyond. The rhythmic sound of waves crashing ashore lulled me into some comfort.
“Wow! You’re so tense!”
“Again, I’m sorry. I didn’t know this beach was a part of your proper — ”
“No apology needed,” Samantha insisted. “As you said when we met: ‘how odd that we humans think we can own a beach.’”
