[Client case] The secret to the increase in sales of Barrel, the top rash guard manufacturer in Korea, avoiding server downtime in spite of 70-fold increase in traffic!

Greetings, this is Naver Cloud Platform.

Today, we’d like to talk about how “Barrel,” a sportswear brand famous for its “rash guard,” tapped the power of the cloud!

Recently, the company has been focusing on “Barrel Fit,” a sportswear brand for yoga, Pilates, in addition to water sports, and chose Sohee Han, the actor from a popular TV show “The World of the Married” as its new model.

You may have heard of “Barrel day” and “Swim day” at least once. In the second half of each year, Barrel holds regular discount events. (FYI, Barrel has been getting ready to hold “Leggings day” this year!) These events have been making a lot of sales by getting ranked at the top zoom-up search words and offering sensational discount rates!

Lately, large-scale online promotions have been active and receiving great response from consumers.

At the same time, frequent service disruptions are inevitable due to traffic congestion.

The use of cloud infrastructure to solve these issues can flexibly scale the server during the promotion period. After the end of promotions, it can be returned to normal, reducing cost and management burden and increasing consumer access.

The cloud infrastructure plays a key role in ensuring that Barrel is able to successfully hold events without paralyzing its online shopping mall, even with such heavy traffic.

Up until last year, the events were held on a well-known e-commerce platform in Korea, but the online shopping mall was paralyzed due to traffic congestion during the event period. Because of this, online sales mostly occurred through Naver Smart Store.

To resolve this, Barrel introduced the Naver Cloud Platform. Despite the fact that traffic has increased by more than 50 times since then, events are stably held without any access delay at its online shopping mall.

As a result, the page view of Barrel’s online shopping mall increased 70-fold and the number of pure visitors increased 39 times.

Not only Barrel, but other shopping mall and online service providers have considered using cloud infrastructure for stable service.

How could Barrel reliably provide its service despite the large volumes of traffic without server downtime?

Normally, Barrel’s web infrastructure consists of 2 web servers, 1 image processor, 2 DB servers, and 1 search server.

However, Barrel expanded its infrastructure for the promotion to 45 web servers, 2 image processors, 5 DB servers, and 3 search servers.

In addition, the company used “CDN,” which quickly delivers various content without loss, and “Load Balancer,” which distributes network traffic in consideration of server performance and loading capacity.

Also, it utilized “Cloud Log Analytics,” which collects and stores logs recorded in the service in one place and analyzes them easily, “Security Monitoring,” which detects various security threats in real time, and “Backup,” which safely backs up data.

The key points can be summarized as follows!

- 20 times scale-out compared to the existing web server

- Flexible scale up/out of DB server

- Application of CDN (Content Delivery Network)

Sales up without server downtime! It’s all possible with Naver Cloud Platform.

In this article, we introduced a way to provide reliable service using the Naver Cloud Platform, even if there’s a large increase in traffic, like in Barrel’s case.
