Opportunity to Improve and Learn (OIL) — a practice at Navgurukul
OIL — Opportunity to Improve and Learn(OIL), it is one of the very intrusting parts of the Navgurukul constitution.
I am Ravina(a student of NavGurukul). In our campus, we get OIL whenever we do any mistake so that we can learn from that mistake. OIL is given by council members like Discipline coordinator (DISCO), Food coordinator, Traning, and placement coordinator (T&P), etc.
Basically Navgurukul is running by the students only so councils are the students also. For becoming a council member there is an election process, which is happening every three months. whoever wants to become they are nominating and then voting;)
OIL v/s Punishment —
* Punishment — when we do any mistake we get punish by someone so that we will be not repeating this again, by punishment we learn that we should not do mistakes.
* OIL — Navgurukul is an open source to become a Software Engineer as well as learn anything(Soft skills) but you will think about how it’s possible?
So here we learn by mistakes, here if anyone did a mistake we get punish but for learning, we take this as an opportunity to learn something.
Eg:-
1. Take a class of English/any Topic of coding.
2. Make PPT of food waste(kitchen)/Importance of English etc.
3. Lead morning Exercise
4. Work with a kitchen team
5. Clean the ground floor where by mistake we throw the wrappers
6. Arrange an activity for everyone,
so on….
So sometimes, we can say most of the time students are taking this as punishment (including I as well), we are not able to take OIL as OIL and because of this only we sometimes fight and don’t want to see each other. But yeah this is also not easy to take OIL as an OIL.
The question is why and how can we take OIL as an OIL? -
In my experience, —while doing OIL we are spending our study time on it and we are not able to fulfill our agenda by that day, and as everyone has their study pressure and they want to do only study.
But they don’t know, How much soft skills are important, except coding(Software engineering) we have to learn many things like communication, leadership, taking things positively and so on.
So I think the student has to understand about soft skills and the importance of that because I have seen this in me. Now I am able to take things positively not in all but yeah improved. This is not mean that I was bad and now I am becoming good, it’s about knowledge, I was not knowing how to take things positively but now it’s improving.
