The Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen
Jul 27, 2017 · 2 min read

While most people in the U.S. are focused on other affairs, few are paying attention to what the U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator Stephen O’Brien is calling the greatest humanitarian crisis since 1945. “We stand at a critical point in our history,” he said. “Without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death.”
A couple questions we are looking to answer:
- What exactly does this crisis entail?
- How did the conflict in Yemen start? What is the current state of the conflict? Which parties & countries are involved? What are the implications of the conflict?
- Why is the U.S. involved in this conflict? What was Obama’s position and how will Trump react going forward?
As you read, think about our reading group about the Iran Nuclear Deal. We spoke about Iran-Russia-Saudi-U.S. relations quite a bit then, and this theme is back in play during these readings. A lot of experts believe that this conflict Yemen is just a proxy for a larger conflict between the above nations.
