If you love nature as much as we do (and we know you do), then Earth Day is a pretty special day. Our annual Earth Day Photo Challenge is a fun way to get out and appreciate the natural beauty of North Carolina.

This year, there are so many opportunities to experience Earth Day around the state and join the photo challenge while you’re at it! Here are a few of the awesome activities and events happening the week of our challenge:

  1. North Carolina Science Festival: This month-long celebration of science education in NC kicks it up a notch for Earth Day with awesome outdoor fun and photo ops.
  2. Earth Day Events at NC Dept. of Natural & Cultural Resources sites beginning Apr. 15: We’ve got Bentonville in Bloom, Trail Days at Lake James State Park and the town of Eden, Indigenous Artist Day at the NC Museum of Art, and more! All are picture perfect. Check out the link for a full list.
  3. NC Science Trail: This new trail just launched in April celebrating the fact that North Carolina is home to some of the most awe-inspiring and accessible science and nature venues in the country. Check it out and snap some pics.
  4. Find Earth Day Events Near You: The NC Dept. of Environmental Quality’s #NCEarthDay page is your “one stop shop” for local and regional Earth Day events offered by cities, schools and organizations and is searchable by city and zip code.

We’ve offered up a week of photo prompts for inspiration, but feel free to share your photos all month on social using #NCEarthDay and #NCPATH. If you’re on a trail, slap on a #YearOfTheTrail.

Oh, yeah…did we mention 2023 is the Year of the Trail? When the Earth Day celebration is over, no need to stay on the couch. Find a Year of the Trail event near you on the Great Trails State Coalition events calendar.

Photography is one of the most popular outdoor activities. Here are a few tips from the National Parks Service for taking awesome nature photos.

Happy photographing, and we’ll see you out there!
