Ten Reasons to visit Gorges State Park

Located in a temperate rainforest, enjoy challenging hikes to multiple waterfalls that are beautiful in all seasons. Always be prepared to hike out as far as you hike in!

1. It’s great for hiking.

There are many different trails to take advantage of at Gorges State Park. Ranging from 0.25 miles to 7.2 miles in length, so no matter how adventurous you’re feeling, there’s a trail for you!

2. There are beautiful waterfalls to see!

Gorges State Park is home to some beautiful plunging waterfalls that are an absolute sight to feast your eyes on!

3. There are unique species in the area to see.

As it says on the park’s website, “about 125 rare plant and animal species can be found in the park, including Carolina Star-Moss and Oconee Bells.”

4. Fun and educational events happen all the time!

There are plenty of scheduled activities that occur at Gorges State Park throughout the season. To view the park’s event calendar, click here!

5. You can even go horseback riding here!

There are 17 miles of equestrian trails at Gorges State Park. Per the regulations on the website, horses “are not permitted beyond Turkey Pen Gap,” and all the “visitors with horses must be able to provide proof of a negative equine infectious anemia (Coggins) test while visiting.”

6. You can even go bike riding here as well!

There are also 17 miles of biking trails at Gorges State Park available for use, if you happen to be looking to use your wheels!

7. Gorges State Park is home to Green Salamanders.

When visiting Gorges State Park, you’ll more than likely come across a Green Salamander. This is because one of the biggest known populations of the species call this beautiful park home!

8. Have a picnic!

There are plenty of picnic tables for you to stop and have a nice meal at in Gorges State Park. If you’re planning for a gathering, there are picnic shelters available to reserve that accomodate 100 people.

9. If you’re looking to have an event or program, you can have it here!

There is an auditorium and classroom that can be reserved, should you be looking for a place to have an event or program. The auditorium can accommodate up to 75 people and the classroom can accommodate up to 40. Click here to view the reservations website!

10. The park is very close to the state line.

Gorges State Park is located in Sapphire, NC, which is just over an hour from Asheville. It is very close to the North Carolina and South Carolina state borders, making it very accessible to those that reside in either state!
