Ten Reasons to visit Mount Jefferson State Natural Area

1. If you like butterflies, there’s a special type that calls Mount Jefferson home.

The Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is home to a unique type of butterfly called the Pipevine Swallowtail. Its wings are made up of a beautiful combination of black, blue, orange, and white.

2. Plant life is extremely abundant here.

The Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is just blooming with so much natural flora and fauna. This park is home to over 750 different types of plants!

3. Different trails with different lengths.

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is home to multiple trails, ranging from 0.3 miles to 2 miles in length. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert when it comes to hiking, there’s a trail for you to take advantage of!

4. There are lots of cool animals to see!

There are a lot of different species that inhabit the area at Mount Jefferson. The cool species that you’ll be able to see include Chipmunks, Eastern Woodchucks, Southern Flying Squirrels, Red Foxes, and more!

5. See North Carolina in a way you’ve never seen it before.

The peak of Mount Jefferson sits almost 4,700 feet above sea level, so you know the views will be incredible. From higher up on the mountain, you’ll be able to gaze into Tennessee, Virginia, and beautiful North Carolina, of course.

6. There are many learning opportunities available.

Educational events and programs are held regularly here by the park rangers. Check out their events calendar to see when their next event is!

7. Have a picnic on the mountain!

There is a picnic area located near the summit of Mount Jefferson! There are plenty of tables and grills that can be put to use. If you’re looking to have a larger gathering, there’s a shelter that is available to be reserved too!

8. It’s located near one of the oldest rivers in the world.

As stated on the state parks website, the mountain “lies along the drainage divide between the north and south forks of the New River,” which is one of the oldest rivers in the entire world!

9. It possibly was a part of the Underground Railroad.

As stated on the state parks website, legend says “that “caves” beneath Mount Jefferson’s ledges served as hideouts for escaped slaves traveling to freedom” while using the Underground Railroad.

10. It’s great for educators!

There is a program about the park that “introduces students to basic geologic processes, rocks, and minerals of the area,” as stated on the website. In addition to this, there is also a booklet and workshop for the educators, completely free of charge!
