Garland Andrew Hardin Sr. was born on May 10, 1919, in Hickory, N.C., to Jordan Andrew and Pearl Shell Hardin. By 1920, Jordan Hardin was working as a hardware salesman [believed to be at Shuford Hardware Company] in Hickory. Garland Hardin attended school in the Hickory City Schools.
