In the latest update of Nectar, some of you might not see any difference, some might take a double look to check if your phone opened the correct app. Yes, the colors changed, drastically.

Taking you back a month, it was late Friday afternoon, I had spent the past 4 hours trying to find. one. magic. color. I was out of ideas and crying for help when I sent a screenshot to a teammate. One hour later when she saw my message, she replied:

Very supportive teammate

I sent this to her:

30% of all the iterations

Taking you back even earlier to 6 months ago at the birth of Nectar, we recognized the importance of colors as a form of identity and expression. Knowing that colors affect mood and even encourage and inspire us, we deliberately chose ones of a brighter tone in hopes that Users will feel confident and exuberant when it comes to taking charge of their health when using Nectar.

In addition, we also had this vision for the app to grow together with our Users, and one way to indicate that is through the use of colors, starting young and vibrant with salmon pink, then moving to confident and caring in pastel yellow and lastly, transiting to secure and stable in royal green. So that’s what we did.

But as it turns out, changing colors is not as easy as it sounds when it comes to software development, not when we wanted to change everything from text to buttons to icons to email template color scheme. In terms of UI design, when we started scrutinizing everything in detail, it appears that the pastel yellow might also not appropriate in some areas, not when we want the Users to be able to read the text. And of course, from a product point of view, what is the value and priority as compared to all the other features?

As with everything in life, we had to make some compromises and that was when my nightmare began. We brainstormed, discussed and it seemed like the solution that balances everything is to find one color, one magic color that matches salmon pink, pastel yellow and royal green, is readable and obvious but not too obvious and most importantly, does not annoy and irritate our Users.

After many iterations, countless use of eye dropper, several pleas for help with a few people, and even a check in with technology (cool stuff: http://colormind.io/), I finally found it! There was still one problem though, the color was not in the color palette of our brand; in fact, if I put them all together, it is distinctly the odd one out.

A few more hurdles to cross, but cherry pink finally got through! (YAY) Together with salmon pink, pastel yellow and royal green, cherry pink will accompany you in your use of Nectar, and we really hope you’ll grow to like them and they will support you in your journey to become more well-informed about your health. Take a look!
