We started Neematic with a belief that electric drivetrain can enable superior offroad performance. Not only that. We also wanted to make sure we are building a sound business with integrity, responsibility to our riders, and always be living up to the highest standards.

Quickly we realized that competence in testing, mass production and distribution of vehicle grade bikes was critical for long-term success. Thus we are thrilled to be joining UBCO, a New-Zealand company famous for 2X2 electric utility vehicles and related products.

UBCO FRX1 and 2X2

There are very few examples of electric two-wheeler startups getting to a scaling point globally already. UBCO, a leader and innovator in lightweight electric utility vehicles, is one of them.

After hosting Tim Allan, the CEO of UBCO we were impressed with the drive, dedication and ambition. Starting just a few years back, they have managed setup global supply chain, mass production and distribution across Australia, New Zealand and the US. UBCO has been developing, delivering and servicing 2x2 with impressive acceleration, all focused on transforming off-road adventure and utility markets with electric drive.

With the very first conversations, our teams connected. We are all excited about outdoors and performance, function-driven design, and enjoy being hands-on in bike development. Including riding it.

From the strategic point of view, we have discovered a number of synergies that makes us stronger together.

Product strategy

UBCO Product Strategy

Similar in appearance the 2X2 and FRX1 are complementary products for heavy-duty outdoor use. We are expanding UBCO’s suit into performance track and offer riders a choice to define work, adventure or play (and a combination of these). We will also benefit from UBCO supply chain, enabling products (power, software and accessories) and contribute to engineering the best high-speed and all-terrain capabilities into the product suite.

Timing and markets

The market is now up and running, as an electric moped, motorcycle and quadricycle registrations in the EU showed 70% growth in the first half of 2019. Electric bicycles and cars drive awareness of more sustainable modes of transportation.

Both UBCO and Neematic core markets overlap (US, Australia, New Zealand) and we will play a role in the European rollout. FRX1 is expected to be available at UBCO dealers in these markets mid 2020.

Energy and culture

It is a meeting of two fast-moving teams with a hands-on approach. Both prioritize delivering highest grade vehicles and the best customer experience against anything else.

“Power your purpose”

The UBCO “power your purpose” tag line is well within FRX1 spirit. Our bikes can do the job for the military or border patrol (as seen in demos). But for most of our riders, the purpose is to play, explore and escape — with a little thrill.
