“Filing back taxes is somewhat similar to anyone else who is filing their prior-year’s income tax returns in Charlotte,” said the Owner of Neighborhood Tax Center, Jackie Taylor. “I mean, they still have to bring their W-2s and 1099s in the same way they would do if they were filing taxes only for the previous year. But, the problem is, most of the time, people who have taxes from years before the prior year have trouble finding those old W-2s or other tax forms…”

Finding Those Old Tax Forms to File Your Back Taxes

Forbes ran a piece in late September of last year that pointed out how important it is to file your back taxes, whether you are a self-employed person or someone with a full-time job. What could end up happening to a small business that doesn’t take care of them, according to the publication, are possibly “levies, liens and other adverse situations” (Washington, Forbes, Sept 2023).

“What are some ways that a person who has to file their back taxes can find those old tax forms that they need to bring to your tax services location in Charlotte?” I asked.

“It’s not really hard to find them, but it may take just a little time to get them in their hands depending on what method they use,” the ten-year tax return specialist responded. “For instance they can use an online method called ID.me.”

An identity provider that is federally verified, ID.me was created to help people better have their true identification verified on the internet. And, as you can see in this article on their official website, the IRS has teamed up with ID.me so that both citizens as well as people like Jackie who work in the tax preparation profession can get a hold of things like past tax forms and/or other applications from the IRS.

Other Info About Filing Back Taxes in Charlotte

In comparison to the rest of the country, North Carolina isn’t doing too shabby when it comes to their tax rates, according to The Tax Foundation, the United States’ premier nonprofit on tax policy. I say that because, as of 2023, the Tar Heel State ranks number ten on the organization’s State Business Tax Climate Index with a “flat 4.75% Individual Income Tax Rate” and a “2.50% Corporate Income Tax Rate” (The Tax Foundation, 2023).

Still, when talking about filing back taxes in Charlotte or any other area of North Carolina, the IRS points out that the main reasons you should file your past due returns are (1) to protect your Social Security benefits, especially if you’re self-employed, (2) to avoid issues with things like business loans or federal aid for college, being that you need to have copies of your tax returns in order to do these things, (3) to claim a refund that you may otherwise miss and/or to confirm your qualification for Earned Income Credit, and (4) to avoid penalties for lateness and interest charges.

In some cases, a person may even have to get forms that are older than three years old. In this situation, you would use Form 4506, according to Investopedia.

“One thing I do want to point out is that if their taxes are older than three years, then I won’t be able to electronically file it,” Ms. Taylor added. “It’ll have to be sent in via the regular mail.”
