Engineer-y Things are a regular occurrence at Neighborhoods.com.

Welcome to the Neighborhoods.com Engineering blog. In this publication we’ll be talking about a number of things we find interesting, including work we’re doing and ideas we have.

For anyone unfamiliar with Neighborhoods.com, we’re a company that is committed to helping people find the perfect neighborhood and their ideal home within that neighborhood. In addition to Neighborhoods.com, we also manage 55places.com, another community-focussed product that serves the active adult market segment. Both products strive to serve consumers with as much information as possible about neighborhoods and communities so that they can make the most informed decision possible. We consider this a lofty purpose as the neighborhood one lives in greatly affects day-to-day life, including weekend and evening plans, friendships, education, etc. It’s one of the most important life decisions an individual or family will make.

Our Engineering team shoulders the responsibility of amassing the vast quantities of data we need to power this service, using that data to determine unique insights about a given location, and providing as much of it as we can to our users. Our work affords us unique opportunities to build tools using interesting data sets and find ways to use new technology to solve challenges. At the same time, we are always challenging ourselves to grow as individual engineers and as an engineering operation. We often succeed, but we’ve also learned some interesting lessons from our failings — which will almost certainly make great stories that you will find here.

As we post to this publication, we’ll be talking more in-depth about the technologies we use and how we use them, new technologies we find interesting, our values as an engineering team, how we’ve succeeded, and how we’ve failed. We hope that you might be able to use some of our ideas to improve your life as an engineer.
