The Return Of The ’90s in Fashion
Just when we thought they were gone for good…
After just one decade and five years, we are pulling styles back from the beloved ‘90s grunge scene. Everywhere people are bringing out slip dresses, berry lipstick, ragged flannels, and choker necklaces and making it new again.
What to Expect: Classy lingerie gliding down the streets (think “13 Going On 30” — you know the scene where Jennifer Garner wakes up as a 30-year-old woman and leaves for work in her nightgown), dark lipstick smudges on your Starbucks coffee cup, a flannel wrapped around your waist as your best belt, and choker necklaces used on many more outfits than just your punk school girl costume.

Let’s break it down.
Slip Dresses
1990s:
2015:
Designers such as Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, and Givenchy forecasted next Spring’s huge appearance of these lace slip dresses that are not only gorgeous in their own silky divinity, but also look polished and chic paired with a men’s style blazer. While these have been popular for some time now, this style has been renewed for at least one more year and will add a light glamorous touch to your spring wardrobe!
Dark Berry Lipstick
1990s:
2015:
Feel free to fiercely pout your dark berry lips this season. A deep berry, very popular in the ‘90s for it’s grungy and edgy vibe, is the hit sensation lip color right now for it’s mysteriously warm and biting look that works great in the fall and winter months!
Flannels
1990s:
2015:
A woman’s best accessory is her flannel button-down wrapped around her waist. The perfect way to add an extra dimension to an outfit, cinch in a loose dress or top, make a look more casual, or break up a pattern is to tie a flannel around your waist! (Chambray and military style button downs work as well) They serve both form and function by adding a trendy touch with just that little bit of extra thought, also allowing you to have a jacket without the hassle of having to carry it around!
Chokers
1990s:
2015:
You know you love it. The last time you wore these, you had your Spice Girls CD on repeat and you were waiting for the next episode of the original “90210". Well, they’re back and hotter than ever! They’re edgy and chic with so many playful options from, the tattoo choker, to thick gold collar chokers depending on the time of day and elegance of the event.
While these are just a few of the ‘90s styles that have re-emerged into the 2010s, they are definitely major fashion statements that pull out our inner grunge and make for bold and confident looks. As the empowerment of women is continually on the forefront, it is important that our fashion matches our fierce new attitude as we heed the opportunities around us and take the world by storm.
