It was supposed to be a slam-dunk. It was almost like taking a college course with “pass or no.” Most Hillary supporters and Democrats had expected Hillary to show up and the Democratic nomination was hers. I mean, she’d done her waiting. She’d stood patiently beside her husband, Bill Clinton, during his two-term presidency. She’d stood behind President Obama, serving as his Secretary of State.

Did she have a strong political record? Yes. Did she have nationwide recognition? Uh, she’s a meme, people. And it didn’t hurt that Hillary, um, took longer in the bathroom than most boys. This was her time, and then Senator Bernie Sanders showed up, and America started feeling the “Beeernnn.”

With over 95% of the votes in, the Iowa caucus’s latest results place Hillary at 49.8% with Bernie only trailing behind at 49.6%. What does this mean? It means that Hillary is still America’s sweetheart, but only by a .2% lead.

Despite Bernie Sanders’ campaign surge of small voter contributions and the social media support by what seems to be every young person with an internet connection, Iowa remains on gridlock. As the first state in the US where a ballot is cost, Iowa is still no man’s land, with votes locked on Hillary’s 49.8% and Bernie’s 49.6%.

But Hillary has won Iowa! That is, according to her campaign. Mrs. Clinton went out on stage tonight, and with the backing of her husband and daughter, she proudly announced “I am a progressive who get things done for people.” She prematurely thanked Iowa and encouraged her supporters to help her go on and win the nomination.

Bernie Sanders also took the stage and spoke to his supporters with his own spin of the Iowa Caucus results. He confessed that although “the results are still not known, it looks like we are in a virtual tie.” The crowds celebrated the tie as a victory, considering a few months ago his presidential campaign was considered a liberal voter’s wet dream and nothing more. Now he has become a movement. He completed his speech by stating that “enough is enough” and that a political revolution of young people and working people and seniors, was upon us all.

It is clear that Bernie Sanders, the longest-serving independent politician in Congress, has awaken something in the American people, from when he first launched his presidential campaign back in April of 2015. It was a hunger that roared in young voters’ stomachs after they first heard Bernie Sanders’ political record. It was a yearning that shock the core of conservative older voters who were searching for an alternative to Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Bernie’s ideology has become a need the American people didn’t know they needed, until someone offered it. This man’s name is Bernie Sanders, and he is 74 year old white man on a mission to make “socialism” cool again.
